“The Shadow Out of Time” by Lovecraft – Culbard

The Shadow Out of Time

‘The Shadow Out of Time’ is an adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s story originally written in the 1940’s in anthology magazine ‘Astonishing Tales’. Culbard, a seasoned graphic novelist (winning the 2011 British Fantasy Awards) has produced what has been noted to be more of a restoration than an adaptation of this cult fiction, keeping much prose and story structure true to the original version. The main character of this psychological thriller, Professor Peaslee suffers from Amnesia and fainting spells and is thought to be suffering from secondary personality disorder. As he looses his consciousness for several years, the reader is taken on an inward journey through the passage of Peaslee’s mind, where strange ancient aliens, the Yithians, are found to be using Professor Peaslee as a vessel to download knowledge to add to their central library – a place that contains all the secrets of the universe. In the Professors struggle to recount his fragmented dreams, a provocative psychology is presented; what is the status of human intelligence in the Universe? Does life exist out there more intelligent and older than humans? Can we ever unravel the deepest secrets of the Universe?  I.N.J Culbard has brought this mystical sci-fi out with a clean illustration style that depicts the ‘unknown’ in a wonderfully original way, with colour palettes that present the strange landscapes and supernatural atmospheres perfectly. If you are looking for something to thrill your imagination in a cosmic adventure this is just the book.
